Two I spied today, first A super sweet VW DoKa build in progress out at GoWesty. I want one of these so badly.

Picture sucks, sorry.

Kinja'd!!!

And the world’s saddest C10, found at the junkyard this afternoon. Poor thing.

On one hand, I really want to own a Vanagon. On the other hand, I am very scared of owning a Vanagon.

It’s a cult, that’s for sure. I have an ‘82, in the family since ’84. Some are better than others, and they can be pretty tough machines with some key modifications.

I’m more specifically a bay window guy, but Vanagons are in that lovely/scary place where I can just about justify getting one as a DD, especially if I could find a Syncro. I really just don’t want to take the risk of joining that particular lottery just yet.

I love the earlier buses as well, but the Vanagon is a bit of a sweet spot in many ways so I don’t blame you. I want a Syncro in the worst way, and a DoKa like this is my dream truck. I live a mile from these guys, and there are loads of them around. It hurts!

There was a syncro van that popped up the next state over in what appeared to be really solid condition for around $10k last year that tempted the hell out of me, but I just couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger. A Westie would also be a blast (especially since they really perfected the layout with the Vanagon), but lolprices.

We had an 86 Westy for 10 years, easily the coolest most interesting rig we’ll ever have. We spent a ton of time putting all over BC, and it never left us stranded.

But also the most nerve wracking.. Our van had been owned by two Dr. previously, and they had spent a lot to get it in great travel shape. I think we lucked out because of all the work they did - and it still needed about $1000 each season.. brakes, transmission seals and rebuild, fuel pump, fuel lines(!), gas tank, coolant lines, aux heater, digifant fun..

Every trip was a fine balance between grinning at how amazing it was and smelling for smoke. We miss it very much.
